Designed, illustrated, and rigged a VTuber model based on a collection of references, design requirements, and customization requests provided by the client.

Shouri Avrielle
Duration
2 weeks
This project marked my first VTuber commission and provided valuable experience in client communication, iterative design development, and Live2D production workflows.
Challenge
Unlike projects that begin with a finalized concept illustration, the client provided a comprehensive reference package consisting of visual inspirations, design notes, previous model references, desired expressions, and requested toggles.
The primary challenge was translating numerous individual requirements into a cohesive and visually consistent character design.
Additional challenges included:
Designing my first female VTuber model
Balancing the purple and yellow color palette across multiple clothing layers
Integrating butterfly motifs throughout the design
Maintaining a professional yet visually appealing VTuber silhouette
Preparing artwork for future rigging and toggle implementation
Managing a large number of requested expressions and accessories
Because the design was built from multiple references rather than a finalized concept sheet, many visual decisions required interpretation and refinement throughout production.
Process
The project was developed through continuous communication and feedback with the client.
Using the provided references and design specifications as a foundation, I researched visual solutions and gradually developed a unified design language across the outfit, accessories, and character features.
Particular attention was given to:
Outfit layering and silhouette design
Accessory placement and butterfly-themed details
Hair styling and alternate hairstyle options
Expression development
Toggle planning for future rigging implementation
Since illustration and rigging were included within the project scope, all assets were organized and separated with animation requirements in mind.
Solution
To unify the large number of requested elements, I established a consistent visual language centered around soft lavender tones, gold accents, butterfly motifs, and clean professional styling.
The outfit was refined to improve silhouette readability while preserving the client's preferred references and color palette.
In addition to the illustration work, the model was rigged with multiple interactive features and customization options, including:
Coat toggle
Hairstyle toggle
Glasses toggle
Expression toggles
Coffee mug accessory
Penguin companion plushie
Additional emotion states and visual effects
These features allowed the final model to feel highly personalized while remaining easy to use during streams.
Result
The completed project successfully transformed a detailed collection of references and requirements into a cohesive VTuber model while providing a customizable streaming experience through rigging and interactive features.
As my first VTuber commission, this project significantly improved my understanding of:
Client communication
Design interpretation
VTuber production workflows
Live2D asset preparation
Rigging implementation
Feature planning and customization systems
